Mother Teresa

by Michaelle from Laguna Beach

My hero is Mother Teresa and I came to learn about her when I was searching on the Internet about people who helped out with kids and a person who helped out with the poor and it came up with Mother Teresa. Also I was talking to my parents about what she has done in her life and all the things she has accomplished and I think she is a very heroic person.

Mother Teresa’s accomplishments were that she was known for being a humanitarian and an advocate for the poor and helpless. She also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971, and the Nehru Prize for Promotion of International Peace and Understanding in 1972. Also other accomplishments that Mother Teresa has done in her life was that she won the Balzan Prize in 1978 and India’s highest award called the Bharat Ratna in 1980. The Bharat Ratna award is an award that is given to a person of high national service. The services that get you the award include artistic, literary, and scientific achievement. She won the Bharat Ratna because of all the charities that she set up for homeless people and people/kids that are in need of help.

Mother Teresa is from the Ottoman Empire, in a city called Uskub. She was the youngest child in her family. She was raised as a Roman Catholic by her mother after her father passed away. Her parents practiced different religions, but Mother Teresa decided to stay a Roman Catholic for the rest of her life.

Agnes or Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910 but on August 27, 1910 she was baptized so that was her official birthday. Sadly when Mother Teresa was only 8 years old her father died. When she was 18, she joined the Sisters of Loreto. On May 14, 1937 she took her vows. She helped teaching at St. Teresa’s School that was near her convent. On September 10, 1946 Mother Teresa decided to leave the convent to help the poor. In 1983, Mother Teresa had her first heart attack while she was in Rome visiting Pope John Paul II. Then in 1989 she had her second heart attack, but luckily she survived. In 1991, Mother Teresa had pneumonia while she was visiting Mexico. Then in April 1996, she fell and broke her collarbone and also in August she caught malaria. Mother Teresa then sadly died in the hospital on September 5, 1997.

Mother Teresa is important to me because she helped out so many poor orphans and also adults. She gave up so much in her life to help all these people. Also she organized an organization called Missionaries of Charity that then opened more worldwide charities. She gave up all of her free time to help out all these poor people. Also she encouraged so many nuns to open their own orphanages and to help the poor.

Mother Teresa is an amazing person who helped out so much in her society and helped a lot of people in her life. She is my hero because instead of thinking just about herself (like most people do) she thought about others and their happiness.
