Mariel Margaret Hamm

by Vivian Esther from Mozambique

Mia Hamm is my hero. She is a great soccer player. She has scored 180 goals more than any female player. Mia Hamm was born on March 17, 1972 in Selma, Alabama. At the age of five, Mia Hamm and her family moved to Texas. At the age of fourteen, she joined the soccer team there. When she was fifteen, she became the youngest member of the U.S team. At the age of seventeen, she scored her first goal for the U.S. team. When she was nineteen, Mia Hamm scored a pair of goals for the U.S. team in China in 1991. She was honored as the best woman athlete of the year for three consecutive years from 1994-1996. She was a member of the gold medal winning U.S. women’s national team in the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. Now Mia Hamm is 35 years old. She is committed to carrying on and never giving up. Now she has opened her own foundation. It is the Mia Hamm Foundation. The supporting partners that helped Hamm open her foundation are Nike, Mattel, and Gatorade. Each company has been a strong supporter for Mia Hamm. Mia Hamm spends her time at the Mia Hamm Foundation helping children who want to fulfill their dream of being an athlete when they grow up.

Mia Hamm interests me because I love sports. It is a very good way to keep yourself fit. I also think soccer is a good sport. Mia Hamm is a hero because she has inspired lots of women. She has shown that even if you are a girl you can still play sports. Mia Hamm is one of the sports players who does not only think of herself but also thinks of others. That’s what makes Mia Hamm a hero.
