Hillary Rodham Clinton

" Our lives are a mixture of different roles. Most of us are doing the best we can to find whatever the right balance is . . . For me, that balance is family, work, and service. "

What is a hero? The word means something different to every person. My hero is Hillary Rodham Clinton. I choose Clinton because she not only has done many great things, but because she is a hero to many people for different reasons. She is a hero because she has shown what women can do and has always supported health care for people unable to afford it for themselves. One of her most notable beliefs is that we are all responsible for America’s children. “It takes a village to raise a child.” She has never wavered in her commitment to help children.

Born Hillary Diane Rodham on October 26, 1947, she has always been inspired by politics. Clinton grew up in a strongly Methodist family in Chicago, Illinois. She was the oldest of three children and has two younger brothers Hugh Jr. and Anthony. Clinton campaigned and supported many Republican candidates during her youth, such as Barry Goldwater. She attended Wellesley College and later went to Yale law school where she met her husband, Bill Clinton. She has one daughter Chelsea Victoria Clinton. Mrs. Clinton has been both first lady of Arkansas and the United States and is currently Sectary of State.

Hillary Clinton has inspired many women not only in the United States but all over the world. She has made it possible for women to believe they can do whatever they want to aspire to do. Clinton was born only 27 years after women were given the right to vote. Many would find it difficult to believe that she would think she would get to this point she has in her career. When Clinton was a child she wrote to NASA asking what she would need to do to become a astronaut, they replied and said she could not because of her gender. Clinton has since proven them and all the other people who did not believe that women could do the same things as men wrong. She has been able to raise a child, be first lady and work hard to bring health care reform about. She has never let people tell her what she cannot do because of her gender. She did not let naysayers discourage her from running in the United States Presidential Democratic Primaries in 2008. During the primaries she ran a very strong and hopeful campaign. She has given people an example of what they can do no matter their gender. “I wasn't born a first lady or a senator. I wasn't born a Democrat. I wasn't born a lawyer or an advocate for women's rights and human rights. I wasn't born a wife or a mother.” Success will come to anyone who is willing to work hard.

From the start of her political career, Clinton has been involved in helping children by means of health care and education. When Clinton was first lady, she brought awareness to the American public about the problems of people without medical insurance. It was then Clinton first tried it implement universal health care, the plan was never put before the House of Representatives or the Senate for a vote, but she kept trying. In 1997 she drafted the Children's Health Insurance Program which helped parents get health insurance for their children if they could not afford it. Many people would not have kept trying to help those how could not afford health care, but she contented to try even if it was unpopular. Many other politicians would never have tried to do something so unpopular, but people in needed help. “We must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society.” When she was at Yale, she volunteered at their child studied center taking on child abuse case for New Haven Hospital. After she graduated, she went to work for The Children’s Defense Fund where she was a staff attorney. From the start it is easy to see she cared about children who could not help themselves. Clinton was committed to helping people from the start and she continues to so. This is one of the main reasons she is a hero.

My hero may have many critics but, Mrs. Clinton is a great role model to everyone. She is a great example of what women can do. She helps people who cannot help themselves. ”Probably my worst quality is that I get very passionate about what I think is right.” This is why Hillary Rodham Clinton is my hero because she works hard for what she believes in.
