Dmitriy Ovcharenko

by Matvey from Moscow

"My Hero" Dmitriy Ovcharenko There were a lot of heroes of the Great Patriotic war. My hero Dmitriy Ovcharenko is one of them. He is my hero, because when he got into a terrible situation he wasn't taken aback, moreover, such qualities as courage, quick wits and quick reaction helped him to do almost impossible.

It happened at the place of Pesets on July 13, 1941. Dmitriy was driving a car with ammunition for the 3rd company, which was in 4-5 kilometers, when he was attacked. He was surrounded by two cars with 50 German soldiers and 3 officers. Leaving the car, a German officer ordered him to lift his hands up, knocked the gun out of his hands and began to interrogate him. But Dmitriy had an axe in his wagon. He took the axe and killed the officer. Then he threw three grenades to the Germans. As a result 21 German soldiers were killed, the others ran in panic. Dmitriy ran after the second officer, caught him and also killed him. The 3rd officer managed to escape.

But Dmitriy kept his head, took documents from all the killed, maps, tablets, schemas and records from the officers, and delivered them to the staff of his regiment. By the way the ammunition was delivered on time.

Dmitriy Ovcharenko is a hero of the Soviet Union. He also was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal.
