WRITER HERO:
NANCY E. BOWIE
by Glenn Bowie from Red Wing

Nancy Bowie dining in Dieppe (Scanned, edited by Glenn)

Nancy Bowie is the spouse of Glenn. We live in Red Wing, Minnesota. We were married in 1970. Among her loveable traits are abilities to write fiction and nonfiction.

We went to Dieppe, Normandy, in 1979 and 1984 to research background for her novel: "Shadows on St. Germain".

Novel

The novel is a fictionalized account of events concerning the Canadian Raid on Dieppe, which took place on 19 August 1942. Glenn sent one of his photos to the publisher for use in creating a cover image. PublishAmerica artist Selena Brewer created the novel cover.

St. Germain is the fictional name for the village of Varengeville. A shore battery located at Varengeville shelled the vessels landing and protecting the 1942 Raiders.

Barbed wire blocked climb by Canadians. (Glenn scanned a photo he took in 1984.)

Detachments were sent to scale the bluffs near Varengeville to destroy the battery guns. One team used this cleft in the bluff. Barbed wire blocked their climb. Glenn took this photo in 1984.

Sammy arrives in London (From Penzance train station staff)

Glenn thinks Nancy shows her skills to special advantage when writing about animals we meet on our travels.

A favorite is Samantha, known as Sammy to her friends. She lives in the Penzance, Cornwall train station. Penzance is the end-of-the-line for trains from London. When the station is quiet, Sammy occupies the room where trainmen rest. She knows how to ask for milk. Occasionally she boards a sleeping car for a trip to London. Staff members inform Penzance folks, and put her on a return train.
