ANGEL HERO:
AUNG SAN SUU KYI
by Annalise from Austin

Aung San Suu Kyi

How many people would speak out and challenge decisions made by a brutal government? One woman did. She has so much passion for her country. She fought for her country, Burma, to be able to vote and have an opinion as to who their president is. And now, since she spoke out, she is under house arrest. Her name is Aung San Suu Kyi.

Aung San Suu Kyi was born in Burma on June 19, 1945. Aung San Suu Kyi was a very bright child. One great tragedy that happened to her when she was young was that her father was assassinated. She attended high school, college, and later attended graduate school in another country. Later she won the Nobel Peace Prize for her great works and efforts. But she could not accept it because she was under house arrest. In 1988 Burma’s brutal government killed more than 1,000 Burmese people and Aung San Suu Kyi thought that was wrong. She has not talked to a lot of people for 11 years, and still is one of the only leaders in Burma.

Aung San Suu Kyi at a happy place in her life
There is a hero in all of us, you just have to believe in yourself, and that’s exactly what Aung San Suu Kyi did. Studying Aung San Suu Kyi has brought me to the conclusion of always believing that you can do anything you set your mind to. Maybe if you believe in yourself you can win a Nobel Peace Prize too!
