Abraham Lincoln

by Brandon from Fremont

Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, can not long retain it."

My hero is Abraham Lincoln, and he was born on February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He was the 16th president and he was against slavery. Lincoln declared freedom to all slaves on January 1, 1863. When he was a president, he lived in Washington D.C. He died in April 14, 1865. This person is important to me because if he did not declare freedom, there would be slaves and people suffering.

Abraham Lincoln’s parents were born in Virginia, his mother died in his tenth year. He had a stepmother, Sarah, who died in 1869. He married Mary Todd and had four boys. Only one of their boys lived, and he died at the age of 62. Lincoln had a brother named Thomas, who died in 1812.

Lincoln used to work on a farm, split rails for fences, and kept a store at New Salem, Illinois. He made efforts to gain knowledge. Lincoln grew up in a wild region, with many bears and wild animals. Opponents of the war, Copperheads, criticized Lincoln for refusing to compromise on the slavery issue. When he was president, he built the Republican Party into an organization. Abraham Lincoln became president in 1860. He won the election again in 1864.
