Audrey Hepburn

by Kayla from Laguna Beach

Audrey Hepburn is my hero because she is very talented, known for her beauty, elegance, and grace, one of fashion's greatest icons, and she helped children around the world. She was born on May 4, 1929 and got sent to a youth boarding school in England when she was in her early teens. She soon had an interest in dance. After the Nazis invaded the country, it was hard for her and her mother to survive. After the war, Audrey continued to pursue her interest in dance. She starred in a movie called Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which showed her fashion side.

At age 22, she went to New York to play in a Broadway play, Gigi, and many other productions. After her many years of starring in many Broadway shows, award shows, and movies, she took a break. In her later years, she became an ambassador for the UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) in the late 1980’s. The UNICEF is a group where you save many children that don’t have homes, parents, who are less fortunate, are crippled, etc. Traveling around the world, Audrey tried to earn money for the children in need. From her understanding, she knew how hard it was to grow up practically starving, due to the time when the Nazis invaded.

Hepburn visited UNICEF projects in Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. She earned an award for her humanitarian work, but died before she could receive it. She died on January 20, 1993 after her battle with colon cancer. Her children and husband carried on to pursue helping young children with an organization known as the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund.

The reason why I chose Audrey Hepburn for my hero report is because I think she is a good example to make the world change. She was not only one of the most famous fashion icons but she made a very big impact on children who are less fortunate than most people. She helped children, danced, made movies, won awards, and worked really hard for her success. She started this all at a very young age and I think she is a good example for people that are my age to pursue their dreams.
