Rima Gizhlaryan from village of Platovo, Rostov region Russia - 1/15/2012 at 1:51:43 PM. I think that it is important to choose heroes because they help to determine the character of a person. I agree that in the absence of positive examples people will start admiring others as they did in Nazi Germany. This process can ruin our moral values. The ancient Greeks said, "Tell me who you admire and I'll tell you who you are." It’s a very nice saying because nowadays children prefer popular cartoon superheroes such as Superman, Batman, Spiderman and so on. I have nothing against them: flying from building to building in bright costumes they let good to overcome evil. They can be the characters to admire why not. Besides these cartoons are adventurous and exciting. But there is a lot of violence and fighting around them. In my opinion teenagers need images that are more positive.
It’s a common knowledge that a hero is a person who does a special act of bravery and doesn’t think of himself first. And I for one consider every man to be a hero or a woman who does his or her duties in life properly. So we can find them in everyday life.

Ashwinee Rvan from Subang Jaya, Selangor Malaysia - 4/25/2011 at 9:12:36 AM. Superman, Batman, Spiderman and the list goes on. These are the much shouted about fantasy characters whom we recognize as heroes. However, the fact remains that there is more to being a hero than just flying around in bright colored costumes and swinging from building to building.
A HERO is a person who has done something that creates such an impact on someone or his surroundings. Of course, I mean a good impact. The impact he/she created should be something that changes a life or even many lives.
Some wonderful examples are Mahatma Gandhi, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Dr. Mahathir, Mother Theressa and the list goes on... We, as ordinary humans with no such superhuman powers have only a fistful of things we can do to help others.
No, I'm not asking you to get of your house and start fighting for the independence of a country but much smaller yet meaningful deeds. For example, writing your thoughts on this MY HERO topic and raising awareness on heroism around the world. This will ensure that there is no fake believe on heroism going around. Spencer Petrovich from Folsom, California United States - 4/4/2011 at 12:08:38 AM. There are many attributes that make you look up to someone; bravery, honesty, perseverance, integrity, and strength, but a true hero is one that has all of those attributes. Heroes could be a coach that helped you reach your goal or a parent that has always been there for you. For me, my hero is my great grandma Erna Tischler.
She was born right in the middle of World War I. While she was growing up she lived in a small town off the coast of the Baltic Sea. She married Ernst Schoenhuff, and she had 4 children throughout 1939-1944. Ernst was unable to help in raising them because he was quickly deployed to aid in World War 2. Two of her children, four year old Siegfried and one year old Brigitte Schoenhuff passed early in their life and my grandma had to bury her children in suitcases while she was fleeing from the Russians. She believed that God took two of her children so that the other two could survive; she said that she doesn't think she couldn't have made it with all four, because food was so scarce. She had to hide her children in old bomb craters covered with some brush to keep them safe when she went out to search for food. She once had to search for medicine for Ursula and Horst by carrying them over her shoulder through the forest until she found a military camp and asked if they would fill her tin cup full of medicine for her children. After the passing of her two children she moved back to Germany and formed a group of single women with children. This group always traveled together as a large group, because it was safer than traveling alone.
She lived safely for a few months, but she didn't know where any of her family was because her father was deployed at a train station. While working there he would often put the water faucet into the stopped train to give the Jews water, because he felt so bad for them. This act of kindness almost got him killed.
One day her neighbor knocked on her door and told her that the Russians are coming, you need to leave.ť So she quickly gathered her supplies and left with her two remaining children Ursula and Horst. So they left on foot again. They were constantly out running air raids but on the occasions that they were caught in one she would sit down and but both children on either of her legs and would say "If a bomb hits us at least we are all going to die together."ť They never had shoes while they were running but one day they found a dying German soldier and traded him some tobacco they found for his boots. They ran for months and eventually ended up at Furthimwald, a refugee camp next to the Czechoslovakian border. The war ended a few months later.
Even after the war she faced problems; she wanted to find her husband who she hadn't seen for more than five years. She finally found him and it turned out he was a Prisoner of War in France, but sadly was remarried, the war destroyed their marriage. She was remarried to a refugee she got to know very well.
Erna Tischler, my great grandma is my hero because she never gave up, she never lost faith, she always persevered, and she was always strong. She lived through two devastating wars and raised two children by herself; one of them is my grandmother Ursula. My great grandma is now 94 years old and is living healthily in the small village of Unterbechingen, Germany. She is a very loving person and has been a great inspiration for me.

I am in agreement with what had been written. The flame of celebrities fires are so shortly lived. True heros are those who base their lives on what comes from within. The truth of what love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, humility and self-control. Yes they aften shy away from the bright lights thrust upon them. Yet it is precisely their actions which we need to notice, so that we can do the same. BedBugDogNJ1c from Chicago, United States US - 2/6/2011 at 10:51:38 PM. I wanted to post you a little bit of word so as to thank you so much over again relating to the spectacular techniques you've contributed on this website. This has been certainly unbelievably generous with you to allow unreservedly just what many of us might have offered for an ebook to get some bucks for their own end, most importantly seeing that you could have done it if you desired. Those tricks as well worked like the fantastic way to understand that many people have a similar fervor really like my personal own to learn a good deal more concerning this condition. I am sure there are lots of more pleasant occasions ahead for individuals that discover your site. Peggy from new york usa - 12/2/2010 at 7:02:01 PM. My hero is my granddaughter, who lived a hard life between her parents, got into the drug and alcohol crowd, was removed from her school and came to live with me. In the last 2 plus years, she has overcome her mental disabilities, has done very well in school. Lost her mother July 1st to drugs, became extremely ill and hospitalized for 32 days with a lung disease and has come back cheerful, full of life and eyes wide open waiting to experience all the great things. She inspires me and we love her to no end. Jennifer Smith from Eden, NC USA - 11/16/2010 at 1:07:42 PM.
I love the thoughts expressed here! What a great resource for communicating the right values for our students. The young people need this more than ever!
I am so excited that our school is planning for a visit (before Thanksgiving next week) by Jess Knowlton, who is a modern hero in stopping a runaway train that inspired the making of the Unstoppable.
Jess wants to give back by visiting with the kids and talking about "doing the right things" and giving back.
We are also proud to honor local community heroes.

Andy from Taitung, Taiwan - 11/2/2010 at 6:23:56 AM. My hero is anyone who makes the world better. Aziz Moummou from Chichaoua, Marrakech MA - 10/13/2010 at 6:51:43 AM. Hi;
I am aziz from Morocco.I think that choosing a hero is one step towards shaping our career.As a teacher,I think that instruction does not value the power of a real model.I will embrace the idea and try my best to fulfill it in my classes. Haemin from Rancho Cucamonga, California USA - 8/31/2010 at 8:55:40 PM. No one can really "choose" a hero. Besides, nobody has the right to decide who is heroic based on their deeds. But we definitely should embrace the people who have stood up for something they believe in. No matter the age, anyone can be a hero. Not all heroes/heroines have to voice their opinion out loud. A person who keeps their opinion to themselves but acts upon the righteous things is also considered a hero. A hero is someone who sacrifices something meaningful to him/her; let it be as something small as a piece of pie, or to the person's life. Someone willing to risk whatever they have could be described as a hero. We can find heroes anywhere, anytime. They don't have to be the leading figures in the world; as a matter of fact, heroes can be found in our classrooms to our homes. Maybe there's a kid in your class that's not the brightest crayola in the box. But maybe that kid risked his life to save a dog or a child from a burning house. He may not exactly be a role model quality, but his bravery and courage defines him as a "hero", someone that deserves praise and recognition for his works. Kat Natividad from Rancho Cucamonga, California USA - 8/30/2010 at 11:29:16 PM. I think anyone can be a hero, and can be chosen to be a hero by anybody who they inspire. That hero can help develop who you are, and make you become a better person. A hero can be anybody, anywhere, that can make anyone's life better, either giving them hope, showing courage, or sacrificing something that may be dear to them, but would give a better impact to those around them. - 8/30/2010 at 10:11:08 PM. My hero is God. Then next comes Albert Pujols. Diana H. from las vegas, Nevada USA - 8/30/2010 at 3:44:39 PM. A hero is not only superman. You can be super without powers.We can't fly or blast through walls. There is something we can be though,a great family. You're a hero in your own family. If you're not famous, so what? If you are kind and caring and being all that you can be then you have more the right to be called a hero than superman.You're super in your own special way which is the best way. shivam from pune, maharastra india - 7/24/2010 at 8:16:01 AM. according to me a hero is a person who can inspire me.A hero is the person who can not only show me the right path but can also inspire me to follow it. One who can save a nation from going on the wrong path and also help them in doing the right things. A hero is also the person who can inspire you to follow his career and show that nothing is impossible in this world. Gaga from jakarta, south east asia indonesia - 6/2/2010 at 7:37:29 AM.
