The Short Film Festival invites media makers to create short digital movies and share in the ancient ritual of storytelling to honor heroes from around the world. Using digital media tools to tell their own powerful hero stories, students become active participants in this age of global communication. MY HERO accepts submissions to the MY HERO Screening Room in four categories: Narrative, Experimental/Musical, Documentary and Animation. Submissions of short films and multimedia presentations are accepted on an ongoing basis..

Winners of the 2005 Short Film Festival were honored in a ceremony held on October 15, 2005 in the Ron Howard Screening Room at USC’s Robert Zemeckis Theatre. Winners received sculptures from Senegal created by Mamadou Tall Diedhiou, who was featured in The Best of Festival Film, The Bird Maker. Thanks go to University of Southern California, Chris Cain, Laguna College of Art & Design, Gary Birch, Mark Cavanagh and LA36.org for their support, as well as to the MY HERO Board members and USC faculty who helped judge this year’s entries. The award-winning films about heroism can be viewed online in the MY HERO Screening Room.
Wendy Milette, Director of the Short Film Festival, was an elementary school teacher who recently received her master’s degree from USC’s Film School. She has created lesson plans and a list of resources for the online film festival to assist teachers and students in creating short films. Wendy has conducted workshops around the world to encourage students of all ages to share their hero stories on film with MY HERO.
