My Hero Grows...
The Need

Our children live in a globally connected world. The potential to use technology to educate and inspire is often lost in a mass media marketplace filled with violence and consumerism. The MY HERO Project was founded in 1995 by a group of concerned parents as a response to the lack of positive role models in the media for children. This not-for-profit Web site was built on the belief that people of all ages would participate in an online journal that illuminates heroes from all walks of life.

Today millions of students, parents, teachers, professional artists and writers discover and share stories, images and films of heroism on this interactive journal. Educators successfully integrate this free project-based resource into curriculum in grades K-12, colleges and community-based education programs to promote literacy, media arts, cross-cultural communication and character education.

The heroes featured on the Web site work for peace and tolerance, human rights and justice, environmental protection and public safety. They are leaders in their communities and family members who make a positive difference in the lives of others. They include explorers, scientists, artists, and inventors whose contributions to society have withstood the test of time. Their stories serve to remind us that we all have the potential to overcome great obstacles and achieve our dreams by following in the footsteps of our heroes.

Growth

MY HERO has experienced phenomenal growth since its inception. Traffic to the site averages over a million page views per month. Twenty-five percent of all traffic comes from over one hundred countries outside of North America.

As part of our commitment to be an open forum for global storytelling, we work with educators in developing nations and low income communities to bridge the digital divide.
