Jackie Robinson

by Steve P. from Sycamore JH

Jackie Robinson is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. But that is not the main reason people call him a hero to this day. He is well known for breaking the barriers by moving up from the Negro leagues in Kansas all the way to the major league team called the Brooklyn Dodgers known today as the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was the very first African-American to play in the majors.

Jackie Robinson wasn’t really grown up around baseball as most people would think, he went to the military and that’s when he was introduced to baseball. He became so good in a little amount of time he left the military and went to Kansas to play in the Negro leagues. That’s when the Brooklyn Dodgers discovered Jackie Robinson.

Jackie Robinson had a very success filled career. He led the Dodgers to six World Series. The Dodgers did although lose 5 of those World Series and all of them where against the New York Yankees. He did win the MVP award in 1949 and finished his career with a .311 Batting Average which is much higher then most of the players get in a single year. That is why he is in the Hall of Fame.

His hero type would be a hero to near and far. The reason he is a hero to near and far is because by him getting in the major leagues a loud many others to come and play there to make a better living. Today many minorities play in the MLB because of Jackie Robinson. During his time he was very well appreciated by other African-Americans. That is why he is a hero to near and far.

Jackie Robinson will always be remembered as a baseball hero for his accomplishments. The greatest one of all was the breaking the barrier separating whites and blacks from playing baseball together. He did many good things and didn’t expect thanks back. Hopefully people will always remember him for the things he did not just for baseball, but for the world. That is why when I hear Jackie Robinson, I think ‘great hero’.
